Unfortunately the food wasn’t to our liking that night. Pickles plate was interesting, but we felt it didn’t come with enough ‘vessels’ for us to enjoy it properly. Mushrooms were excellent, because who doesn’t love browned buttery creamy mushrooms. Gnocchi was a let down; it was pan fried in a very light sauce with cauliflorets and lacked flavour/ excitement for us. The texture wasn’t as pillowy soft as we had anticipated. The baked squash was also quite average despite how lovely it looked; it also lacked texture and flavour. We ended the night there without trying dessert since we were full but also because we didn’t quite enjoy our mains sadly. We brought cake so naturally there was cake age. It was a little hefty considering the cake age costs the same price as the cake (there were 5 of us) but they did put nice good leaves on it for us when they broth the cake out which was an unexpected nice touch.
We were sat outside at the front of the venue which allowed for us to people watch and enjoy the warm weather in March.
Each dish was tastier than the next, and the service was lovely.
For a new venue, everything seemed to flow smoothly.
Glad for the experience and would definitely return.
I like the share plate style of service.
Each dish is served one by one, giving the diner the chance to savour each dish while it’s hot.
Service was great.
Cocktails amazing.
My husband is omnivore & I’m vegan – we found the flavours exceptional & dietary requirements were perfectly catered for.
Highly recommend!
Prepare your palate with a twee plate of house pickles ($20) which branch beyond the usual suspects with okra, tomatillos and woodfire tempeh. The standout for me is zucchini in sherry vinegar. The same in-season gourd is served confit with white beans and green harissa ($23). Be sure to scoop up the ring of excellent olive oil with the warm flatbread that comes with the dish. The team will bring out sourdough for the twice-baked golden pippin squash soufflé ($33) to make the most of its oozing manchego and walnut surrounds. While the developed style of the 2022 Pennyweight Beechworth Riesling ($95) didn’t win me on first sip, it rose to meet the indulgent soufflé. Brussels sprout and potato pierogi ($34) were the only misstep across our meal, not quite living up to the texture and flavour of local Polish and Ukrainian exemplars. Flora, by the team behind Continental and Mister Grotto, is a good addition to a strip which is rapidly proving there is no wrong door to a good night out.
Now I know why – every dish was a delight and the waitstaff and maître d’ so genuine and welcoming. We felt like honoured guests in this warm Danish-style place with beautiful lighting.
My carnivore partner was a tad sceptical, but LOVED the creamy mushroom casarecce ragu, and the rest of our group had the perogies, gnocchi and pumpkin soufflé. All were delicious! The Pumpkin was a smaller dish perhaps more suited to a starter, but still delicious.
For our starter we had the special- a white bean and zucchini “hummus” with a coriander (?) pesto on top with homemade pita bread direct from the oven- absolutely to die for. We ordered double bread right away!
Thank you Flora for making it such a good night. Next time we will definitely do the share banquet so we can try everything!
